16th Jan 2023
“Life Fantasy” is the first large-scale exhibition showcasing the avat-garde works by Shanghai-born pop artist Jacky Tsai in Southwestern China. Meanwhile, “Life Fantasy” is the outcome of the artist’s self-reflection after his ten years of artistic exploration in the United Kingdom, and an occasion to respond to and pay homage to his hometown. As an artist who grew up in Shanghai and currently work and live in London, UK, Jacky was the originator of McQueen’s primary floral skull, and his works have been praised by the King of Asian Pop Music, Jay Chou, which is also one of the highlights of his career. Jacky’s works are consistently formulated from a multi-cultural perspective. He incorporates Eastern elements and traditional Chinese craftsmanship with stylistic features from Western pop art movement. Boldly appropriating and abstracting cultural symbols from both the East and the West, Jacky has formed a distinctive style of his own.
The artworks of Jacky Tsai are filled with an imaginative force that shatters the constraints of reality, which he accomplishes mischievously with humors and ironies characteristic of pop art. He often uses natural elements as the vehicle for his unique visual language. Through merging traditional Eastern aesthetics, the natural environment, pop culture icons and cartoon figures into pop art, he provides a focused lens for the audience to expeirence the collision and connection between different cultures. Jacky’s keen sensitivity to the advancement of the art world has led him to experiment and explore ways to incorporate technology into his art. This exhibition also brings in augmented reality (AR) technology in order to provide the audience with an interactive and multi-sensory viewing experience that fuses art, technology, and sound. On-site audiences can experience the artistic charms of AR and the joy of seeing the still objects in Jacky’s work “come to life” by merely downloading an app.
